Guide to Successful Internships
The National Recycling Coalition’s Campus Council strives to improve linkages between higher education and the sustainable materials management industry. One of the strongest links is creating internships.
Students who are upper-division, graduate and recently-graduated can connect with this application to recycling agencies, organizations, and businesses each committing to offer a rewarding experience.
Academic credit is the responsibility of the student. Placement agencies agree to provide written evaluations for the student and their faculty. The NRC Campus Council assists both the student and placement agency.
Paid stipends for internships, if available, are typically determined between the agency and the student. Some schools internship policies have additional stipulations that should be consulted before stipend and/or credit is offered.
Responsibilities addendum to this Guide.

The Zero Waste Research Internship advances a multi-year project to create better linkages between higher education and the sustainable materials management (SMM) industry- consisting of reuse, recycling, composting companies and organizations.
To earn three credit hours of undergraduate credit, most interns will work a total of 150 hours (or approximately twelve hours per week) expanding a national resource center for Zero Waste as well as participating in applied projects locally. Specific duties will range from researching and cataloging resources and best practices, conducting professional level communication with organizations and individuals, and updating databases and websites. Students will enhance, or be introduced to, website development, survey instruments, database management, marketing tools, and/or outreach skills through campus professional development resources.
Final outcomes or goals of the project:
Student interns will continue to develop linkages between higher education and the sustainable materials management (SMM) industry through their work at CU. An expanded set of resources will be available to student researchers and faculty. Programs on and off campus will benefit from ongoing and newly requested applied internship work. The interns will benefit from professional development opportunities along with high-level exposure to SMM concepts and practices, as well as professionals and their organizations.
Other comments:
Interns will meet with the Program Director and/or with other interns weekly. Google Documents will be used to maintain regular workplans with individual tasks and time reporting. Final Deliverables will be accessible on the CU Recycling website and promoted through the National Recycling Coalition. Fieldtrips to local processing facilities will be conducted. A final reflection paper summarizing work over the Semester will be required. A written evaluation will be provided that details the intern’s performance and activities.
