This Earth Day, Remember: Together, We Are Recycling
An Earth Day Call to Action from the NRC President Bob Gedert
“Preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.” —Carl Sagan
Climate change is challenging the life of our planet, Earth, that pale blue dot that Carl Sagan notes we should preserve and cherish.
When we promote recycling as a sustainable daily practice, we are taking a substantial “green step” toward addressing climate change.
When we refine and create operational efficiencies in our recycling programs, we bring recycling one step closer to the circular economy.
Yet, it is not business as usual. The earth is warming faster than it can sustain. We must take stronger actions. Recycling as it is, must evolve, to have a lighter carbon footprint and become a greater contributor to the greening of the Earth.
“All we have to do is to wake up and change.” —Greta Thunberg
This Earth Day, the 52nd anniversary of the first Earth Day, take that “green step”, not alone, but through coalition, with the National Recycling Coalition. Let’s join together to make real change – the Earth needs our help. Recycling For The Future! Together, We Are Recycling!

Save the Date: 2022 National Recycling Congress
The NRC Conference Committee is pleased to announce the the 2022 [Virtual] National Recycling Congress will be held November 9-10 on the Zoom platform. The 2022 Congress will bring together a wide variety of practitioners and policymakers at local, state and federal levels, in organizations and business, in the areas of waste management, reuse, recycling and more.
In 2021, NRC attracted over 400 registrants to its event, and we know that are many NRC members will find the virtual conference a cost- and time-efficient and effective way to learn the latest trends and meet national experts, as well as network with colleagues across the country. NRC received 19 proposals from it's Call for Sessions outreach, and are now working with affiliated NRC Recycling Organizations to bring the "best of" tracks, sessions and speakers together for two days of Congress activities.
NRC will launch Sponsorship information soon and intends to open up early-bird registration in early June with a new NRC Congress website. You can keep up to date in the interim on NRC's website, or contact Congress Manager, Julie L Rhodes. Mark your calendars now for November 9 & 10!

Is Recycling A Fraud?
by Chaz Miller, for Waste360.com
Over the last few years, recycling has been subject to a barrage of bad press. First it was the bad markets caused largely by the Chinese decision to ban the imports of recyclables. Then came the stories claiming that our recyclables get tossed into landfills or are sent overseas to be dumped. That was followed by easily quotable and highly misleading statistics such as only nine percent of plastics are recycled. No wonder many people are suspicious about recycling.

The Use of Images vs. Words on Recycling Signage
There’s a broad understanding that what information get’s presented on bin signage can impact sorting behavior. But much of the thinking that goes into their design is based on assumptions and anecdotal experience. A new blog series from Busch Systems specifically looks at the use of words vs. images on signage. Part 1 reviews recycling-specific studies that have compared the effectiveness of signage using one or the other. Part 2 explores some of the research into the way people cognitively process images differently than words. Part 3 offers take away’s and recommendations on when to use one or the other (or both). Fair warning these take a deep dive. But for those who like to geek out on recycling behavior (you know who you are!), these blogs offer some interesting insights on the topic. Busch Systems would love to hear thoughts and feedback on these.
