Illinois Recycling Foundation Conference a Great Success
From the perspective of the sponsors and the exhibitors, the Illinois Recycling Foundation’s first in-person conference held at Joliet Junior College on August 30 and 31, was a success. Many of the participants expressed satisfaction with the 18 session options and the awards luncheon, along with the 60 that attended a dinner, featuring a silent auction to seed a scholarship fund, which raised over $500. This Zero Waste two-day conference included four tour options: a pre-conference walking tour from a biology professor of the campus’ fen and other natural areas, a walking tour of the energy efficiency attributes with the college’s Sustainability Coordinator and Architectural professor, a bus tour to a unique hard-to-recover plastic recycler and a national electronics and metal recycler or a bus tour of a composting site and a university that collects food scraps as part of its recycling efforts. COVID did impact attendance and even prevented a speaker from attending in-person but through a recorded Zoom and telephone, he was able to present remotely.
|
“We need these in-person events to learn from one another, have conversations that aren’t possible in the virtual world and that truly lead to improved services, spark ideas and allow for adaption of innovations,” stated IRF President Marta Keane.

Learn more in this episode with guest speakers Robin Ingethron, CEO of Good Point Recycling and founder of Fair Trade Recycling, and Aaron Mintzes, Senior Policy Counsel at Earthworks. Recycling is in direct opposition to mining; reuse of materials rather than extraction of virgin materials. Yet, misinformation has convinced many that recycling is not a viable source for materials. This needs to change. Get ready to be outraged.
