EPA Announces New Funding & Resources on ARD!
Each November 15, our nation celebrates America Recycles Day, and this year the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced several new funding and resources to advance recycling / waste reduction efforts, including:
|
Recycling Program Toolkit: This new interactive collection of materials can help states, territories, local governments, tribes, schools, nonprofit organizations, companies, and public-private partnerships create effective programs for recycling, composting, anaerobic digestion, reuse, repair, and waste reduction. Materials in the toolkit can help communities increase participation in recycling programs and reduce contamination in the recycling stream, and include case studies, training materials and a resource on standardized terms.

Bi-Partisan Infrastructure Law Funding for Recycling & Composting: $100 Million dollars is now available to help build and transform solid waste infrastructure, manage materials to achieve a circular economy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create cleaner, resilient, and healthier communities.

- Political Subdivisions Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling Grants is for local governments for collection, transport, and processing for recovered, reused, recycled, repaired, refurbished or composted materials. Applications due Jan 16.
- State and Territories Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling Grants is requesting Notices of Intent to Participate from states and territories by Dec 15.
- Recycling Education & Outreach Grants for consumer education & outreach on waste prevention, reuse, recycling, and composting to increase participation, decrease contamination and more. Applications due Jan 16.

National Recycling Congress Big Success!
The 2022 [Virtual] National Recycling Congress was held virtually on Nov 9 & 10 and drew 447 registrants from coast-to-coast, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and everywhere in between. The event offered two, full, virtual days of learning, networking and professional development with 28 sessions and 80 expert presenters, there was something for everyone, whether seeking 'nuts & bolts' program information, innovative solutions to hard to manage materials, and the latest in extended producer responsibility, single use packaging, multi-family and so much more. Thanks to all who attended - NRC is seeking feedback from those who participated by taking a short survey. You can check out the complete program, and the list of expert speakers! Registered attendees will soon receive the NRC Congress materials, with videos of each session and the event directory soon to follow. Meet your 2023 NRC Board of Directors
Thanks to the NRC members who attended the annual Members' Meeting held on Nov. 9 during Day 1 of the National Recycling Congress. Elections closed on Nov. 18.
|
- Retiring NRC Board Members include: Dave Keeling and Tracy Frisch. Thanks to them both!
- Re-elected Board Members include: Pete Adrian, Lisa McDonald, Maggie Clarke, Jay Bassett, Alec Cooley, Kristine Kubat, Marialyce Pedersen and Brittany Rosenberg.
- New Members joining the Board include: Keima Borsuah, Charles Kamenides and Damany Head. Those Board Members continuing out their term include: Rick Anthony, Cheryl Coleman, Colleen Foster, Bob Gedert, Wayne Gjerde, Marta Keane, Leslie Lukas, Mary McClellan, Lisa Skumatz, Martie Solomon, and Cynthia Vant Hul.
While Board Members remain mostly behind the scenes, they are the engine of all the work that NRC does, and were most recently instrumental in helping secure the latest and substantial federal funding through its Recycling is Infrastructure Too Campaign. Thanks to all those who serve these important roles.

ReFED Offers Catalytic Grants for Food Waste Management
A new initiative is providing $20 million for nonprofit and for-profit organizations to de-risk and scale high-impact solution to food waste. The first open call for the ReFED Catalytic Grant Fund went live on Nov. 14 and letters of interest are due Nov. 30. Learn more here.

EPA Taking Public Comment on GHG Reduction Fund
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently seeking public comments on the newly established Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. This first-of-its-kind program, established in the Inflation Reduction Act, will mobilize financing and leverage private capital for clean energy and climate projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions – with an emphasis on projects that benefit low-income and disadvantaged communities. The fund will distribute $27 billion in competitive grants. Provide input by Dec. 5 here.

EREF Grant Pre-Proposals Due Dec 1
Pre-proposals are accepted by the Environmental Research & Education Foundation through 5:00 p.m. ET on Dec 1. Pre-proposal topics must relate to sustainable solid waste management practices and pertain to the following topic areas, including Climate change impacts on and from solid waste management; Quantifying circularity of materials; Quantifying environmental burden of plastic wastes; Environmental Justice relating to solid waste; Waste minimization; Recycling; and more.
