A Coalition In Action

by Marialyce Pedersen, NRC Board of Directors & Sophia Huda, NRC Communications Committee

With momentum building since the start of 2021, thanks to strong leadership and super-charged committees handling compelling tasks, the NRC is leaping ahead further this summer: a new Strategic Plan was approved in July; new Board members were appointed; upcoming national event planning is underway; a paid staff member is providing valued administrative support, and the organization is growing.

Become a Sponsor
Sponsorship opportunities are open to support both upcoming NRC conferences and promote your programs to an engaged national audience. Reach the broadest audience by combining sponsorships with NYSAR³’s state conference, the National Recycling Congress and the National Zero Waste Conference. Become a Collaborating Organization
NRC is encouraging all state recycling organizations, and other regional and national groups with shared missions, to become Collaborating Organizations so that we may build momentum together. Your group commits to promoting one or both of these conferences to your members and partners, and in exchange, NRC will provide unique recognition its events.

Reuse Wins at Events: A life-cycle analysis of reusable and single-use cups by Upstream

Over the past decade, the sports, entertainment, and live events industry has searched for alternatives to single-use plastic in food concessions. As fans return to sporting arenas and concert-goers celebrate the return of music festivals, sustainability issues at events and venues are coming back into focus – specifically, the ever-present disposable plastic cup.

Many attempts at solutions have been introduced, from bioplastic cups to reuse systems and now single-use aluminum. But there has been no clear scientific consensus as to which options have the greatest environmental impact and which options have the least – until now.

Nation's First Packaging EPR Bill Signed Into Law

The governor of Maine has signed legislation establishing extended producer responsibility for packaging materials in the state. It’s the first bill of its kind to become law in the U.S. Legislative Document 1541, which establishes EPR for certain packaging products spanning virtually all material types, was approved by both the state House of Representatives and Senate in June. On July 12, Gov. Janet Mills signed the bill into law.

Under the law, packaging producers will be financially responsible for funding recycling of their products. The legislation was sponsored by state Rep. Nicole Grohoski and is titled “an act to support and improve municipal recycling programs and save taxpayer money.”
