David Keeling, NRC Board President
Mr. Keeling holds a B.S. in Marketing from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Mr. Keeling currently serves as Chair of the Pi Sigma Epsilon National Education Foundation which supports sales and marketing education and provides scholarships to college students interested in sales and marketing careers. He is a Past National President of the Pi Sigma Epsilon, Inc.
Stephen Bantillo, Executive Director, Recycling Development Institute and NRC Executive Vice-President
Stephen M Bantillo has been actively involved in the resource management field for nearly 30 years. Currently, he represents the Recycling Certification Institute (RCI), implementing CORR, a National Standards Certification program based in Sacramento, CA.
Much of Stephen’s involvement in the environmental arena has been with local and state government, and non-profit sectors. He grew up in San José, CA, where he was hired by the City of San José to develop and manage new resource programs. Stephen created their award-winning Construction & Demolition (C&D) program, the nation’s first program to document and certify C&D material recycling facilities’ performance. He was appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger in 2007 to oversee California’s beverage container recycling program, which included oversight of the system’s $1.2 Billion annual budget and over 2,700 recyclers.
Mr. Bantillo served on CDRA’s board, receiving their “C&D Recycler of the Year” award in 2008, and currently serves several boards representing the recycling industry in North America. He was appointed to San Jose Unified School District’s Bond Oversight Committee, establishing protocols on school construction funding and assisting the District with the greening of its construction projects. He is also co-founder and past Chair of California’s Construction & Demolition Council.
He has been a member of the NRC since 1990 and this term represents his sixth time being elected to serve on the Board of Directors. He previously served as Vice President and has been a leader on NRC’s policy issues since 2004.
Mick Barry, Managing Partner, M2B2, LLC and President, MidAmerica Recycling and NRC Board Chair
Michael J. (Mick) Barry received his BS in Forestry from Iowa State University and his MBA from Henderson State University of Arkansas. He spent 19 years with Weyerhaeuser Company serving as a Forester, Tree Farm Manager, Procurement (timber)/ Logging Manager. After 10 years working in the woodlands in Arkansas he became Regional Wood Yard Manager for the Mississippi/Alabama region. His career then took him into manufacturing where he became Process Manager at the Columbus, Michigan paper mill (Raw Materials and LWC paper production areas), Manufacturing Manager for Diapers at the Los Angeles, California facility and finally the General Manager for Engineered Laminates in Stony Brook, New York.
In 1989 he and his family moved to Iowa where he co-founded CC and C Recycling, a business that evolved into the Mid America Recycling Company, which became the largest privately held recycling company in the United States. Mr. Barry’s primary role beyond Principal of the company was to oversee the marketing of materials. While performing his marketing functions he developed enduring relationships with direct shipment end users in Mexico and Asia. He successfully fulfilled his marketing functions at Mid America Recycling Company until 2007 when the company was acquired by Greenstar Recycling. In 2010, Mr. Barry officially retired from Greenstar Recycling, but continued to serve as consultant to Greenstar in the management of their Wal-Mart Recycling Partnership until 2013.
In 2015 Mr. Barry and his partners purchased back the Mid America Recycling Facility in Des Moines, IA (Iowa’s Largest Single Stream processing facility) from Waste Management and n 2014 purchased back the Lincoln NE facility and currently serves as the President of Mid America Recycling headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa.
Mr. Barry is a co-founder of the Iowa Recycling Association and served as its President for 6 years. In addition, he has served two terms on the Colorado Association for Recycling Board of Directors, as well as two terms on the National Recycling Coalition Board of Directors, where he served as Vice-president and Treasurer. Mr. Barry also assisted in the founding of the Recycling Organization of North America (RONA) and served on its Founding Board of Directors, which recently (2014) merged with the National Recycling Coalition.
In addition, Mr. Barry has severed on numerous Iowa State task forces for recycling and solid waste management issues, and was appointed by Iowa Governor Culver to be a member of the Iowa Comprehensive Recycling Task Force that was missioned to chart Iowa’s recycling future. Governor Culver also appointed Mr. Barry to be a member of the Iowa Department of Economic Development’s Infrastructure Strategy Task Force which was commissioned by the legislature to develop a growth strategy for Iowa’s Future Economy 2020.
Mr. Barry also serves as a Board Associate of the Iowa State University Alumni Association’s Board of Directors.
In 2010, Mr. Barry formed M2B2, LLC and currently serves as consultant to Angel of Shavano Recycling located in Salida, CO.
In his spare time, Mr. Barry plays water polo for the US Masters National Team at the Masters World Championships (having won the Masters World Championships held in Russia in 2015), coaches the Iowa State University Water Polo Club team, pans for gold, white water rafts and hikes in Colorado.
Marialyce Pedersen, NRC Secretary
Marialyce is a widely experienced global sustainability, circular economy, zero waste expert with an emphasis on waste prevention and reuse. She has a policy research, development and program implementation background (municipal and private sector) including responsible purchasing, green building, extended producer responsibility, forestry and electronics recycling certification (FSC, PEFC), healthy cleaning, home and municipal composting, compostable food ware. Marialyce was a Senior Policy Analyst for Disney Corporate Citizenship, 2003-2019 and she developed curriculum and taught Resource Management and Zero Waste Business course under a 2012-2013 Department of Labor Green Jobs grant, which became a model for other courses nationally. She is a co-author of bestselling book, Backyard Composting (1992) with over 600,000 books in print and author of Keep It Off the Curb, a municipal guide to home compost program implementation (1994). Marialyce is an early home compost program educator (1990-1994), a competent Toastmaster, a skilled public presenter. She is creative, innovative and optimistic.

I appreciate the reason NRC was formed and believe it should be supported. I believe those of us with experience and passion should take a turn to serve the NRC so that it can be the clear for voice for recycling and ultimate resource efficiency. Kerrin O’Brien, Executive Director, Michigan Recycling Coalition and At-Large Member of the Executive Committee
Kerrin O’Brien has worked with the Michigan Recycling Coalition in a variety of capacities since 1993 but has served as the Coalition’s Executive Director consistently since 2008. In addition to guiding and managing the organization to its current success, her interest lies in building consensus and movement around pro-recycling policies that work for both the public and private sector. As a nonprofit development specialist and facilitator, Kerrin has led many Michigan-based nonprofit organizations through strategic planning and development efforts. She holds a Social Science bachelor from MSU and has completed the Institute for Conservation Leadership’s Executive Director Development Program.
Peter Adrian, Solid Waste Agency of Lake County, Illinois
Peter Adrian has been an active member of the National Recycling Coalition through his involvement in the Illinois Recycling Association and through his attendance at NRC Congresses and Resource Recycling Conferences. As an active member of the Illinois Recycling Association, he served on the IRA Board of Directors from 2001 to 2010. Peter began his career in 1994 as the Director of Recycling Services at Northern Illinois University. In 1997, he took on the position of Solid Waste Coordinator for DeKalb County, Illinois and in 2001 began his current position with the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County, Illinois where he has assisted 42 Lake County municipalities with various recycling and waste reduction initiatives. Peter serves as board member of the Illinois Counties Solid Waste Management Association and maintains memberships with Solid Waste Association of North America, the International Society of Sustainability Professionals and the Illinois Food Scrap Coalition.
Richard Anthony, Director, Zero Waste San Diego
Richard Anthony was instrumental in the formation of the NRC and served on the NRC Board from 1980 – 1993. He has served on the California Resource Recovery Board for over 40 years.
Richard is once again looking forward to adding insights and guidance to the NRC.
Holly Arthur, Senior Vice-President, Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI)
With more than 20 years of experience in many roles in communications and public affairs, Holly Arthur has experience in finding synergies across coalition groups members and has frequently served as a liaison to such stakeholder organizations on behalf of trade associations.
Susan Collins, President, Container Recycling Institute and NRC Treasurer
When I was elected to the NRC board in 2010, I worked with the NRC board and membership to move from a very precarious financial situation to one of stability. In 2018, we face new challenges like international recycling crises, falling recycling rates and plastic marine debris.
It would be an honor to be elected back to the NRC board, and face these new challenges with the new NRC board and diversity of NRC members across America.
Alec Cooley, Senior Advisor to Busch Systems
Alec has over 25 years of experience in the recycling field, most recently as senior advisor to Busch Systems. He began his career as an operations manager for the Arcata Community Recycling Center, before spending nine years at Humboldt State University managing the school’s solid waste and recycling programs. Alec next worked as a project manager for the National Recycling Coalition from 2006 to 2009. Between 2009 and 2018 he served as director of recycling program at Keep America Beautiful, where he oversaw public space recycling initiatives including grant programs, research projects and development of resources to expand and improve recycling in away-from-home settings. Through his positions at NRC and KAB, he also served as the program manager for both the RecycleMania competition and College and University Recycling Coalition (CURC) Webinar Series between 2006 and 2018. Alec served on the boards of the CRRA (2002 to 2006) and the CRA (2010 to 2012).
Wayne Gjerde, Recycling Market Development Coordinator, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
As the Recycling Market Development Coordinator with Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Wayne consults with startup and expanding companies in the areas of finance, new product development, business plan development, sales and marketing.Wayne has done extensive work in economic analysis linking the environment and economy. Wayne has been a speaker at many local and national recycling events.
Wayne has thirty plus years’ experience in financial analysis, banking, new business start-ups, sales, marketing, new product development, customer service, consulting, business development, EPR and management. He has worked in the private and public sector.
Wayne earned his B.S. in Business Administration at St. John’s University-Collegeville, MN. He also has attended the Minnesota Bankers Commercial Lending School and Robert Morris Associates Commercial Lending School.
Susan Gordon, Environmental Planner, Environmental Services Department, City of Fort Collins
Susie has worked as an environmental planner for the City since 1992 and manages programs to help meet Fort Collins’ Zero Waste goals of diverting materials from landfill disposal through actions that include recycling, re-use, composting, and source reduction.
As part of Fort Collins’ Environmental Services Department, Susie leads a team that works closely with the City Council to increase waste diversion through new policy measures and strategic planning. In addition, the Waste Reduction & Recycling program’s focus is to:
- Educate and publicize local recycling guidelines
- Expand opportunities for residents who want to go beyond conventional curbside recycling, including ongoing operations of a full-service recycling drop-off facility (since 2002) that features a new “hard-to-recycle” materials yard (2016)
- Implement the City’s Pay-as-you-throw Ordinance
- Introduce more businesses and multi-family residents into recycling programs
- Take a collaborative approach to working with sister agencies in the Northern Colorado “waste shed” on regional solid waste management needs
- Integrate waste reduction efforts with Fort Collins’ aggressive Climate Action Plan goals.
Susie is a past member of the board of directors for the Colorado chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America, the State’s Pollution Prevention Advisory Board, and the Colorado Association for Recycling. In 2017, she received the CAFR Lifetime Achievement Award. Susie takes great personal interest in closing the loop whereby so-called waste materials become commodities and resources for local construction, manufacturing, and agriculture.
Susie graduated from the University of Washington and attended graduate school in the Environmental Studies program at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.
Mary McClellan, Executive Director, Carolina Recycling Association
Mary McClellan has served as the Executive Director of the Carolina Recycling Association (CRA) for 2 years. CRA is an avid supporter of the NRC and an active ROC member. She has proudly contributed to the recycling industry as an operations specialist for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, as a local government recycling program manager, and in the private sector as a government liaison. These many roles have provided an in depth comprehension of the may motivations, interests, and moving parts that make up sustainable materials management. She believes that communication, truth, and clarity among all stakeholders are the key to progress and success in our industry. She has been involved with NRC in some capacity for over a decade and believes it is vital that as a nation, we have a national coalition that not only represents the interests of the industry but also provides an intellectual and professional hub for all stakeholders. She believes the NRC is the best and nerdiest national recycling organization around, and would like to keep it that way. Recycling Nerds Unite!
Fran McPoland, Vice-President, Paper Recycling Coalition
The NRC has been an integral part of my professional life, from Capitol Hill, the White House’s Federal Environmental Executive and nearly two decades in the private sector. As co-chair of the Policy Committee I helped draft the Mission and Guiding Principles the guide the NRC and I am committed to those values. If elected I will do my utmost to ensure that the NRC fulfills its essential mandate.
Sarah Pierpont, Executive Director, New Mexico Recycling Coalition
Sarah Pierpont started her career in the recycling field as the coordinator of the Recycle Santa Fe Art Festival in 2005 and working to keep forest trimmings out of landfills as part of a Collaborative Forest Restoration Project. She has worked for the New Mexico Recycling Coalition (NMRC) since 2006 and became the Executive Director in 2015.
Throughout her tenure at NMRC she has designed and implemented new programs for both urban and rural recycling operations and led the organization to serve as the voice for recycling in the state. Sarah is inspired by the many subtle benefits that recycling brings to communities, such as economic development, community building and quality of life. She holds a degree in Geology from Colorado College and a master’s equivalent in Geography from UCLA. She lives in Santa Fe with her husband and two daughters.
Lisa Rider
Lisa joined the National Recycling Coalition to facilitate collaborative efforts that improve domestic markets, develop best management practices for regional closed-loop systems, and create conversation about how to reduce contamination in the recycle stream.
Antonio Rios, President, Puerto Rico Recycling Coalition
The biologist Antonio Rios worked at the Department of Natural Resources and Environment in the Scientific Research Division (Marine Resources). He currently serves at the Solid Waste Authority with 25 years of experience. He directed the Recycling and Education Program for 10 years and was its Executive Director.
In addition he has belonged to several professional organizations of which his participation is distinguished at the Puerto Rico Recycling Partnership, as President of the Board of Directors of the Puerto Rico Recycling Coalition, Inc
Lynn Rubinstein, Executive Director, Northeast Recycling Council
As a Board member, volunteerism in support of the NRC and its mission is essential for the organization to grow and thrive. I will bring the same energy and commitment to serving on the NRC Board as I have to being the Executive Director of NERC and the various initiatives I have had the privilege of participating in over the past 19 years.

William Turley, Founder and Executive Director, Construction & Demolition Recycling Association
Having me on the board will bring in the largest waste sector (by weight) in North America, where 74% of the material is recycled. It will also be a link to the industrial materials recycling, such as tires, foundry sand, etc. In addition, I will work with the staff to employ the tactics I learned building the CDRA in order to improve the internal operations of the NRC.
